Vaughan's Soccer World Cup Scores Big

Vaughan, Ontario – More than 400 residents attended the City of Vaughan's Play for Peace Soccer World Cup and Cultural Food Fair on Sunday, June 13 at the Dufferin Clark Community Centre located at 1441 Clark Avenue West in Thornhill.


"I am delighted by the overwhelming response we received from the community for our Play for Peace Soccer World Cup and Cultural Food Fair,", said Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco, Chair of the Peace Tree Committee. "Soccer is truly a world game, and by combining it with an international food fair, we were able to bring the many cultures of Vaughan together through one celebration. The various activities that were held in June, Peace Tree Month, raised awareness about the message of the Peace Tree and how fortunate we are to live in a society that embraces inclusivity within diversity."

Peace Tree Day

Peace Tree Day was inspired during the filming of the award-winning movie The Peace Tree by Mitra Sen. It is an annual festival for children, youth and families of every culture and faith to share and celebrate peace and diversity.

The City's celebration featured a soccer tournament with teams represented by the Glen Shields Futbol Club, Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service and City of Vaughan with Members of Council, media and city staff. Glen Shields Futbol Club won the tournament.

The event also featured different cuisines from Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Portugal and Southeast Asia for everyone to sample.

"It is wonderful to see the spirit of Peace Tree expressed in so many creative ways," said Mayor Linda Jackson. "Bringing our diverse community together for fun activities and delicious food is a true testament to the meaning of Peace Tree."

Glen Shields FC is Proud To Announce that Alyssa Fenuta Carried the Olympic Torch

The Glen Shields Futbol Club is proud to announce that Alyssa Fenuta, our 2011 GFC Girls U9 coach, Women's U21 team player, and Club summer administrator carried the Olympic Torch on Friday, December 18 in Bolton, Ontario. Alyssa was very proud to represent Canada and said it was an experience of a lifetime. She felt that for that 300m run she had the whole world in her hands and it was great to be part of history along with some of the most influential people of Canada who ran the torch as well. Alyssa is very proud to be a Canadian.

                                       

GFC Boys 2000 Black at 2009 CCAA Men's Championship Game

The GFC Boys 2000 participated in opening ceremonies for the CCAA Men's Championship game and helped out as ball boys for the game. Our local favourite Seneca Sting played an impressive game with end-to-end action and won 3-2 in extra time to clinch the gold medal and were declared 2009 CCAA Men's Soccer Champions! Special thanks to Terrance from GSSC BU12 for carrying the provincial flag and a big congratulations to all the Seneca players and to Head Coach Vito Colangelo for the big win! The GFC BU10's were treated to a great halftime show of free-style soccer juggling with our very own GFC Coach Patrick 'Patty D'. Special thanks to Coach Deesh, Coach Vito and Shannon Wright (Seneca College Technical and Site Sports Coordinator) for making this day possible for our boys and their families.
