The under 8 girls showed their true spunk in their season opener. They were playing a great first half against Markham, with five minutes to go in the half, when a penalty was called and Markham scored to give them a 1-0 lead. But our girls worked hard and scored the first goal of the season with two minutes left in the game to tie it up. Great work girls!
GU9
The Girls played their first outdoor game in 5 Celsius and rainy weather. We gave up a late goal in the first half and were down 1-0 at the break. We started with a 1-2-1-2 format.
At the start of the second half, we went to a 2-1-3 attacking format and quickly leveled the match. We had a penalty call on us and got caught with 1 defender as the other team played a striker offside and we were down 3-1. We had pressure on them for the last 15 minutes and we scored with 1 minute left. The girls showed urgency and quick stole the ball at kick off and we had a great chance to tie but the ball went over the crossbar. Final 3-2 loss.
I was pleased with the game and see a lot of promise on the team. We could have easily tied or won. This team did not win a game last year 0-12-2(W-L-T) and only scored 5 goals all season. This year will be different.
BU9 Red
The u9 Boys Red team won their first game 5-1 against Kleinberg. Our next game (thanks to Caesar) as you already know is Saturday out in Newmarket. I know it wasn’t easy for Cindy to arrange, but it is going to be one crazy weekend. The Newmarket coach actually emailed me yesterday to offer to call YRSL on our behalf to reschedule the game. He also thought it was unfair. It’s unfortunate that our political riffs have to affect 8-9 year old kids. Anyways the kids did great and we are looking forward to the COVI this weekend.
BU8 Black
The U8 Boys Black played 4 games this week (all in one day!) Three COVI games followed by their first YRSL game on Saturday night vs. Markham 1.
The COVI games provided our boys with great opportunities to use their skills under pressure as a team.
COVI Highlights:
- Held a 1-0 lead against the formidable Woodbridge West at the end of the 1st half.
- Scored goals in all three games.
- Executed three set plays to near perfection.
- Showed excellent positional play in their third game.
YRSL game vs. Markham 1:
The U8 Boys Black team put in a solid effort vs. Markham 1 on Saturday night. The boys had enough energy left to keep in close in the first half and entered the second half down 2-1 This was after facing two PK’s, one of which was stopped by our keeper with a great diving save. Our boys put more pressure on Markham 1 in the 2nd half and we converted a PK to tie it up 2-2 but Markham followed shortly after with their 3rd goal. The boys showed their true ‘never-give-up’ attitude and scored a third goal with 8 minutes left in the game. We kept up the pressure but gave up a 4th goal to Markham in the last minute of the game. Regardless of the score, our boys felt like winners because this was the best game of their busy day. All the parents were very proud with the progress we saw from 10am to 8pm on Saturday, May 24th, 2008. It was a GREAT day for the Sun Devils U8 Black team!!!
Special Mention: Our man of the day was our goalie Domenic “The Wall” Tucci who stopped balls all day long at the COVI and capped his fantastic day with a diving save to stop a PK for an otherwise sure goal.
Go Sun Devils!
BU9 Black
Despite this being the first rep soccer game ever for most of the players on this newly formed GS team, the boys played like pros. They put to good use all the things that Coach Deesh has been teaching them over the past few weeks and came out ahead 6-4. While the boys were leading 4-1 at ½ time, Oak Ridges fought back and managed to tie the game at 4-4. But it was GS that got the final two goals and put the game out of reach for Oak Ridges. The game was a great confidence builder for the team as we go into the COVI weekend.
BU10 Black
The under 10 Boys Black team played their first game of the season on Wednesday May 21, 2008 in Woodbridge versus a very good Striker team. The Woodbridge team came out very strong and scored a goal within the first 10 minutes.
Our boys settled down and started to take the game to Woodbridge and had numerous chances to score but the first half ended 1-0 for Woodbridge. Our boys dominated the second half but luck was not on their side as they could not get a bounce to go their way. As the boys kept pushing to tie the game, the Woodbridge team scored again in the final two minutes to secure victory. Although, it shows up as a loss, it was a great start to our outdoor season.
GU12
The under 12 girls played their first game of the season on Wednesday May 21, 2008 in Oshawa. The Oshawa team came out strong and scored two quick goals. But true to their spirit the Glen Shields girls kept their composure and managed to score with five minutes left in the first half. The girls returned to the field in the second half and outplayed Oshawa scoring two additional goals to take the game.
BU14 Red
The U-14 Boys Red Team played their first game of the season in Malvern. The boys came out strong and popped in two goals in the first half and lead 2-0 after the half. The boys kept great composure and did not let the referees bad calls get to their heads. After Malvern scored one in the early second half the boys stayed strong and did not let anything else by and scored an insurance marker to win the game 3-1.
BU14 Black
The home opener found the Boys U14 Black team in top shape and ready to perform the necessary task of winning their first home game against the Toronto Eagles at a 5-0 score. Exceptional performance by the entire team which worked together to create an effortless win!
BU17
We set some high team goals and expectations for the 2008 season and to accomplish these goals we needed to get off to a good start. Coach Willy set the tone with a great pre-game warm up and motivated the team with his pre-game talk.
1st Half- The high winds would play a factor in the game and as a strategy we decided to play against the wind in the first half. This worked to our advantage as most of the play was held in the neutral third and we carried the play with our midfielders and defenders controlling the ball on the ground. Our keeper Luca Palombi made a great save off a header on a corner kick. This was about the best scoring change East York had. In the 44th minute our Captain David Kim fed a great through ball to our striker Sammy Newell and it was a foot race. Sammy broke free of the defender and placed a perfect shot past the East York keeper, we went up 1 - 0.
2nd Half – We now had the wind in our advantage in the second half of play and the players did not let up. The play was held mainly in the attacking third and it was a matter of time before we scored. We went up 2 – 0 in the 50th minute of play on a great chip shoot over the head of the East York Keeper, by our Left Midfielder Daniel Hyun. In the 85th minute our Keeper Luca Palombi placed a dropkick right to our striker Paolo Carabetta and he got past the defenders to make it 3 – 0.
Final: 3 – 0 for Glen Shields
BU18 Black
The under 18 Black boys played their first game of the season on Tuesday May 20, 2008 in neighboring Richmond Hill. The team came out strong, created many chances and scored the season opener in less than 2 minutes of open play by Mathew Annecchiarico. In the second half the boys continued to dominate the opponents and scored the second goal from an Anthony Campos corner kick which was a short one combined with Mathew Annecchiarico for a back post run by Mark Waldhausen who tapped in. Richmond Hill started to press with the help of wind in the last 20 minutes and were awarded a goal when Patrick DiLecce missed kicked the ball into his own goalkeeper Mathew Nugara.
The Glen Shields boys kept their composure and finished the game with their first win of the season. Although winning the match and getting 3 points is a positive feeling the team should have capitalized on four or five other opportunities created from open play.
The Player of the game was Anthony Campos who played a full 90 minutes displaying his talents to be a two way midfielder (defensively and offensively).
The next game will be against Oshawa Kicks on Tuesday May 27 at 9PM on DD1

U21 Men’s
The U21’s opened the season at home at Concord Thornhill South on Thursday night against cross town rivals Vaughan Shooters dawning Woodbridge Jersey’s. The make up of the U21 Team are players who play in the NCAA or NAIA in the United States and those who play closer to home at Toronto and York University as well as Seneca and Humber College. The game was an intense match but with a number of injuries and players unable to register in time because of their late arrival back from the states only three U21 players were in the line up. The Boys Black had 13 players in the line up of which 8 were in the starting line up.
The U21’s lost the game 2-1 but were only beaten by goals on two defensive errors in front of goal. Throughout the entire match it seemed the U18’s outclassed the Shooters tactically. The vast difference was the physical aspect of the game where the Shooters dominated in tackles and in the air. However, our boys played with 10 men when in the 20 minute Steven Ganz was ruled harshly by the referee for clipping the Shooter Striker and being the last man in defense. The Shooters scored on the ensuing free kick. Not to be outdone the players regrouped and kept possession of the ball and created opportunities.
In the second half Joey Figliomeni had a break away when he timed his run between the opponents with Keith Boar who played a pass along the ground, but unfortunately Joey being pressured by thee defenders pushed the ball past the diving goalkeeper and missed the far post by inches.
In the last 15 minutes the boys hit the post and the crossbar while counter-attacking the shooters. In the dying minutes with the U21’s pushing up the Shooters were able to capitalize on a poor clearance from Mark Waldhausen giving the Shooter’s the advantage of the second goal. In the last minute of play the U21’s created some intense pressure which caused the Shooter’s to give away a penalty which Chris Kistenoglu placed in the upper corner.
The next game will be against Scarborough Strikers on Thursday May 29 at 9PM on DD1
U21 Women’s
Yes, it’s true.
The GU-21 Sun Devils Win OWSL Season Opener. A tribute to the growth of the GSSC female program…
As Team Captains; Catherine Ciamarra, Alyssa Fenuta and Julia Dell’Aquila greeted the opponents and game officials at centre field for the traditional coin toss, the bugs/mosquitoes were buzzing around in the air furiously. But on this night there would be no distractions for the Sun Devils to prevent them from reaching their target objective.
Glen Shields takes a 1-0 lead 15 min into the game on a nifty give and go between Christina Allegretto and Stacey Jackson with Julia Dell’Aquila scoring from the edge of the 18 yard box. Several other opportunities were squandered in the first half with the Sun Devils dominating the play with ball possession and territorial play. The game was lively and entertaining and the new pristine field was a sight to behold for both teams.
Confidently carrying the lead into the second half of last night’s contest vs. Barrie Spirit, the Sun Devils strike for their second Goal from the outside flank, 20 min into the second half, with Maria Procopio dodging a defender and volleying the ball past the very capable Barrie keeper from close range.
The Solid play of Sweeper Sari Mogul and Stopper Angela Robibero, elevated the team’s confidence and solidified the Defence.
The enthusiasm of the new season provided an entertaining pace throughout the match and both sides traded chances.
The “icing on the cake” arrived with 18 min to go in the game when midfielder Angelica Marocchi boomed a cracker of a shot from the edge of the 18 yard box for a 3-0 lead. Angelica battled relentlessly, and was rewarded for her tenacity.
A jubilant group of players on the Glen Shields Bench was feeling pretty good about themselves when U-16 Sensation Cassandra Nicolodi converted a corner kick to solidify the victory in the Team/club’s debut season. Amanda Perreira records the Shut out.
The coaches were pleased with the girls performance and they were applauded for their efforts after the match.
A terrific start to the OWSL 2008 season. The Focus shifts to the next Challenge.
