The girls played their second league game against Bradford. They started the game very strong and earned a two goal lead in the first 15 minutes. The game continued and Bradford scored one goal by half time. During the second half the Glen Shields girls were persistent with their efforts as Bradford turned it on and finished with a 2-1 win.

COVI Tournament:
In our first few games ever as a team, on real turf, we advanced to the Semi-Finals of the COVI Tournament before losing to Spartacus SC. The boys showed great hustle and determination, scoring 11 goals in 4 games against stiff competition from a number of quality teams.
League Game vs Aurora:
Playing away the night after playing four Covi Tournament games this weekend, a determined Sun Devils squad outplayed the Aurora Stingers, maintaining possession for most of the play, with several chances to open up the score after leading 1-0 midway through the first half. Our fatigue showed, with Aurora capitalizing on two chances to take the lead 2-1. Our boys fought back in the dying minutes with numerous chances around the net before scoring in the final minute off of a well placed corner kick and scramble in front of the net. Our Sun Devils walked away with a well earned 2-2 tie.

YRSL game vs. Woodbridge West:
After a busy start to the season, and scoring 6 goals in 4 games, the Sun Devils Boys U8 Black team worked hard against Woodbridge West on Monday night in their 5th competitive game together as a new team. We gave up only 1 goal in each half along with creating some good scoring chances toward the end of the 2nd half. Even though we could not put the ball in the back of their net, the boys came out strong in the 2nd half after a good pep talk and some simple advice from Dave Benning: “Be first to the ball!” With this in mind our boys did well to shut down Woodbridge and really had them on their heels in the last few minutes of the game. Good things are happening with BU8 Black. Go Sun Devils!

The Girls played their first home game last night against Vaughan.
We started slow and 15 minutes in we were down 1-0. Late in the first half,
Vaughan struck again but we got one back before the whistle. Down 2-1 at the half. In the second half, we started slow again and went down 3-1. After that, we carried the play the rest of the way with a second goal with 15 minutes left and the equalizer with 5 minutes left. We pressed to the end but could not get the winner.
Final GSSC 3 – Vaughan 3. Great crowd at Patricia Kemp!

Bad performance, good result.
This week’s game against Vaughan did not go the way we planned it to go. The coaches told us to play a hard game, win all the fifty-fifty balls and tackle hard. When we went into the first half, it was almost as if we were sleeping. We were NOT winning the fifty-fifty balls. We were NOT tackling hard. We were NOT shooting. We did not do anything the coaches told us to do. Vaughn Azzuri dominated the whole of the first half. Thankfully, the half-time whistle blew and we were still at 0-0.
During the break, the coaches told us that we had to start winning the fifty-fifty balls, to play more aggressively and to take more shots on the Vaughan goalie. The second half started but we still looked sleepy. In the first half, we should have taken advantage of the sun and taken some shots on their goalie. It was always going to be difficult to see the ball in the sun. It seems that the Vaughan coach had the same idea because one of their players took a long range shot with the sun right behind him. It was an easy shot but the sun made it very difficult for me to see the ball. I lost the ball and it trickled past me and into the net. Oh no! We could not lose to this team! This made our team wake up a little and we started attacking their goal with more aggression. Within a few minutes, we had scored the equaliser. We then got a free kick on the edge of their penalty area and Alex hit a hard free-kick towards the left corner of the net. However, it was supposed to be two-touch and only Alex had touched it. Do not tell me the referee will not allow this goal! Then, just before it crossed the line, one of the Vaughan players got a slight touch with his boot and the ball smacked into the back of the net. We did it. We were winning. Shortly after, the referee blew his whistle and that was the end of the game.
Bad performance, good result! I am happy to get the 3 points, but we have to improve our performance next time.

We won our first 2 league games both in convincing style with consecutive 5-0 wins over Barrie and Bradford. The girls then went on to win the COVI by beating a very tough Pickering Team 1-0 before beating Richmond Hill in the final by scoring in the last few minutes of regular time, 1-0.
This week we outplayed Markham, but could not score and the game ended in a 0-0 tie while playing in very cold blustery conditions.

Glen Shields 1 - Lake Simcoe 0.
A second half goal gave Glen Shields the win in a very even and hard fought game.
The team played as a cohesive unit and stuck to the game plan throughout.
All the players demonstrated great character and the will to win.
The hard work, that the players of this first year team, have put in really paid off late in the second half as the very well organized defence put up the shutters and closed out the game.

Last year the only YRSL game we lost was in the cup finals to Richmond Hill (shootout). Richmond Hill finished second to us for the league title. Wednesday night from warm up and throughout the game the whole team hustled and played aggressive. For the first half the game was mostly in their end. Our forwards pressured the defense really well and beat the defenders wide and crossed the ball. Our midfielders won some good battles in the middle and if they lost the ball, they did everything they could to try to get it back. When they won the ball they looked to play it forward immediately. Our defense also did well getting the ball out of our end to the forwards or midfield. Sometimes we needed to be reminded to move up faster when the ball was in their end but otherwise the team did very well. We ended up with a victory scoring three goals, but we could have converted on more of our opportunities.

Despite numerous obstacles and with a Herculean effort the U12 Girls Black Glen Shields Sun Devil's soundly thrashed their opponents, the West Rouge Storm on their way to a one nil victory May 27, 2008. Perhaps the game can be best described by contemplating Storm Coach and provincial staff coach Bobby Lennox's pot-game quote. "The Glen Shield's Technical Director's influence on his club clearly has launched them to another level. We have a lot of catching up to do...."

The U-14 Boys Red Team played their third game of the season in the second game of a back-to-back against Toronto Eagles. The boys wanted a big win now that they are playing at home and allow no teams to get points easily at their home field. The boys came out flat but still allowed nothing through and waited for their chance to come. Eventually they got their chance at put the ball in the net at take the lead after the first half 1-0. In the second half the boys came out hungry and put in another 4 goals in the half to leave the game with a 5-0 win.

The U18’s played their home opener on Tuesday May 27th, vs. Oshawa Kicks following the U12 Girls Black defeat of Markham 1-0 under less than ideal conditions. The temperature dropped for the 9PM kick-off and the winds increased from North to South not evident during the U12 Girls game. Playing their home opener, it is was important for the team to not lose at home, which would not only help the team’s image of being difficult to beat at home but the Club’s as well.
The Sun Devils started out very sharp trying to capitalize early putting Oshawa on their heels defensively. Joey Figliomeni and Mark Ganhao both had chances to put a goal in each but missed on the near side. The play continued to be one way and the Oshawa team held fast playing very deep allowing no penetration from the long balls being sent forward by the Sun Devils defenders. Against the flow of the game Oshawa scored around the 25 minute on a weak goal off a rebound from a corner kick where goalkeeper Mathew Nugara did not come out aggressively and left fullback Alp Gokgoz did not mark his man tightly eventually allowing for the tap in at the back post. Not to finish the half down a goal the Sun Devils pushed on and were rewarded by Mark Ganhao well placed tap in at the back post from a corner by Patrick DiLecce.
In the second half the Sun Devils played complacent with little thought on how to execute the game plan agreed upon at halftime on breaking down the Oshawa Kicks who again dropped off deep into their own end defending in front of the penalty box and substituting players in and out like they were a hockey team. Anthony Campos, Patrick DiLecce and Keith Boar all made attempts with long range shooting but failed to hit the back of the net. Mark Ganhao, Joey Figliomeni, Robert Macchia all had opportunities inside the penalty box from through balls sent by the midfielders between the defenders but all failed to finish decisively. All knew placing the ball in the far corner was the correct thing to do. Near the end of the game with five minutes left the Sun Devils were awarded a penalty on foul inside the box. However, Mark Waldhausen shot to the near right side was saved by the goalkeeper causing the Sun Devils to unnecessarily lose two points allowing Richmond Hill to gain ground and only be 1 point out of first place by defeating North York Hearts 2-0. West Toronto will be the next opponent on Tuesday June 3, at DD1 who will be looking to bounce back from their 2-1 loss to Woodbridge.
For the second time in as many games, the player of the game was Anthony Campos who played a full 90 minutes covering the entire area from penalty box to penalty box to continue the attack or help break the oppositions by getting into tackle after tackle.
Coaches Quote: ‘it is difficult to accept a tie, when the opportunity to win the game is within the capabilities of the players ability but due to the lack of focus, concentration in regards to how to score goals at the far post, capitalize on a penalty shot and loosing site of the effective game plan the team puts additional external pressure on themselves to win the league which is the goal set out by the Club.’

U21 Men’s
The U21’s moved to DD1 fro their second home game vs. the Scarborough Strikers on Thursday night. Steven Ganz was sitting out the game with a league suspension, Mario Kovacevic still a week away from returning from an ankle injury, only three U21 players in the line-up Co-Captains Massimo Collu-Marchese (Tennessee NAIA) minding the net, Anthony DiBiase (Niagara College NCAA D1) playing left full back and Liron Lashevsky playing up front. The U18’s filled in the remaining available spots on the field and on the bench when the remaining U21’s were sent home for being late.
As in the first game vs. Vaughan Shooters the U18’s did not look out of place, in fact the Sun Devils outplayed the Scarborough Strikers from start to finish both technically and tactically. Goalkeeper Massimo Collu-Marchese only had to make one big save in each half. In the first it was consecutive shots which the defenders were unable to block with their own bodies and in the second it was a unbelievable save by stealing the ball off the Scarborough forward on a breakaway trying to out manoeuvre him on the near side.
The U21’s (really the U18’s) had 17 free kicks, 7 corners and 16 shots on goal but were unable to score because of the outstanding goalkeeping in the Scarborough net.
The Player of the Game was Mathew Annecchiario with his ability to out run and outwork the defenders who had to change not once, not twice but 6 different times to keep up with him. The Scarborough Strikers were asking to be taken off because they were so outmatched by Mathew.
Coaches Quote ‘The performance tonight shows what our U18’s can do playing 3 years up and in fact 4 for half of them. If it was not for the performance of the Scarborough GK who cleared 4 balls off his line that he was beat by and the 3 shots he save over the bar and the one around the post on a shot from Patrick Di Lecce from 30 yards out the score could have easily been 3 or 4. The players not only played but entertained the 47 fans in the stands and with warmer temperatures on the horizon we hope more will be in the stands to watch.’

U21 Women’s
Lackadaisical Effort Almost Costly
On Thursday May 29, the Glen Shields Sun Devils U21 women’s team had yet another interesting, nerve-wracking, yet successful game. Arriving at the field merely 20 minutes before game time due to poor directions to the field; the girls were nervous but hastily prepared for another battle against Scarborough.
The game started off strong, with our girls putting in a good effort to keep possession of the ball. The first 25 minutes were in our hands, when finally from outside the eighteen yard box Daniela Robibera fired a bullet shot that went in over the goalies head. Nearing the end of the half the game started to slow down, and the girls started losing the initial intensity that they set out with at the beginning. Due to the lack of concentration, Scarborough hammered in a similar goal, which was near impossible for the goalie, Amanda McMillan, to stop.
The play at the start of the second half did not see much change from our dwindling effort in the end of the first half. The Scarborough team managed to score two more goals off an unlucky ball passed between defenders and goalie, and a rebound from an initial save off of a cross. Although it seems the girls may have given up hope, a smart coaching decision to put another man up forward to help the offence changed the pace of the game entirely. With this change, the effort from the girls began to rise and the momentum shifted back to the Sun Devils. This energy provided the girls with their second goal of the game while closing the deficit to 2-3 half way through the second, on a lob shot by Alyssa Fenuta. With renewed confidence the team pressed on and did not stop attacking and only 5 minutes later a beautiful goal by Julia Dell’Aquila, got the Sun Devils back into the game with a 3-3 tie. The girls were determined to put another ball in the opponent’s net, and with the time running down everyone was doing their best to keep the game in their hands, looking for the next big goal. There were many chances created, with luck not being on our side. Finally, the winning strike was delivered when Angela Robibera, the Sun Devil stopper, made a long cross that was hammered into the net by Christina Allegretto from close range.
All players fought hard for the win, keeping the coaches and the parents sweating right until the end of the game. The game was not one of their best played, but the girls managed to come back form a 3-1 deficit to keep our season going on a positive note. Amanda McMillan, played an excellent game in goal, stopping many tough shots. Overall, the Team should feel happy with the outcome, but can take notice that even the slightest distraction can cause havoc on the game plan.
Not being able to prepare properly before the game was a factor. Education takes place constantly.
Let’s look forward to the next Match at Home vs. Oshawa.
