GU8
On Tuesday June 3, 2008 the under 8 girls played against Unionville in their third game of the season. It was an exciting game with all the girls battling to try and take the win. We’re starting to see great progress with girl’s skill and understanding of the game. Unrelenting as he girls were, they end the game with a 0-0 tie.

BU8 Red
Our first game featured a lot of hustle and determination vs. Unionville dominating with a score line of 8-0.  However, it was our second game against Richmond Hill which stood out for our strong play.  Despite the loss, we maintained possession for most of the game, out shot Richmond Hill, and exhibited great passing throughout.  We clearly outplayed both teams, with lessons learned in both games to help us better ourselves as a cohesive unit. (Tom)

BU8 Black
Scoring your first ever goal in organized soccer is a great feeling, doing it on your birthday sends your emotions over the top.  Here’s how Tyler Cusimano described it:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!! – June 2, 2008.

I was running as fast as I could up the right wing and looking for my team mates to make a pass to…no one was open. I was on a bad angle and I saw the goalie was playing a little out his net and blasted the ball hard towards him. The ball sailed high, the goalie raised his arms to save it and it deflected off his outstretched hands and into the far left corner.  UNBELIEVABLE!!!  The crowd went wild…my team mates went wilder! I had a grin on my face from ear to ear. We went on to win the game 2 – 1. My first goal in organized soccer and the U8 Blacks won the game…a night I will never forget!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!! Tyler Cusimano, U8 Black #11”

YRSL game vs. Richmond Hill II:
We got all fired up for our home game shouting out our new cheer:
Whose house is it?  Our House!
Whose house is it?  Our House!!
WHOSE HOUSE IS IT?  OUR HOUSE!!!
WHO ARE WE?  SUN DEVILS BLACK!!!!

Coach’s message to the players after we beat Richmond Hill at home 2-1:
We won this week’s game because we were determined to do so.  Even with one player missing (Nathan home sick) we pulled together for our best game yet.  We proved that no one is going to come into our house thinking they will walk over us.  From the time you arrived at the field until the end of the game you showed that you are soccer players who mean business!  Showing the other team who is the boss starts during your warm up:  Do it right, do it like you mean it and do it like you’re ready to dominate the game.

Read this list of things you did right in our game, read it twice and think about what you did right this time and what you can improve on next time:

- Big attitudes and tough determination winning lose balls by Adrian, Giancarlo, Eitan, Michael and Netanel.
- Speed and non-stop drive for goal from Giancarlo, Aaron, Josh, Adam and Tyler.
- Giancarlo challenged hard against their goalie and defenders and although he didn’t score he won us many free kicks and showed the other team how big and strong we are.
- An impenetrable defensive brick wall formed by Sam, Ben, Adam, John, and Tyler.
- Smart plays by John, Tyler, Adam, and Adrian to kick the ball out to the sides and away from our danger zone.
- Smart communication from GK Domenic to Michael and Aaron.
- All drop kicks and goal kicks by Domenic were to the sides and away from our danger zone.

GU9
Victory at last!  The girls came out with a full barrel of offense and coasted to a 4-1
Win over Woodbridge.  10 minutes in, we knew our opponents could not match up.
The best defense is a good offense and that is what we have.  3 milestones were surpassed last night:
1/ First win for this group ever in outdoor competitive soccer (0-12-2 last year)
2/ 4 points in 3 games gives the team 2 more points than ALL of last year.
3/ 9 goals in 3 games is 3 more than ALL of last year.
Winning is contagious and these girls have caught the fever!!! (Angelo LaMantia

BU9 Red
Our Glen Shields Boys U9 Red team are still undefeated!  They played last night against Thornhill and won the game 6-2.  The boys are making great strides in working as a team, and focusing on ball movement and strong communication.  We are off to the Unionville tournament this weekend, and we will let you know how it goes! (Ted)

GU10
Our W-1-0 Glen Shields vs. South Simcoe United
The GU10 team played a hard fought game against the South Simcoe United this last Sunday afternoon. Playing a defensively focused style, with controlled passes up to the forwards, the girls all played well. Scoring the game’s only goal, in the first half and holding the determined pressure of the United in the dying minutes of the last half. Congratulations to the girls for their hard work.

BU10 Black
Some of the players left home as early as 4:30 and due to an accident on the 400 highway we still got to the field in Barrie just after 7:00.  The Barrie team was understanding and gave us a couple minutes to warm up. Either it was the long ride or habit; we didn’t come out strong off the whistle.  The Barrie team did and within 10 minutes they were ahead by two.

They say the ball rolls both ways, sometimes your way, sometimes not and today it was not.  The Barrie team is a very strong team, they were first to the ball, challenged hard and won most of the 50-50 balls.  They passed well and spread out.  Most of all, they took shots on net, hard high shots.  Late in the first half, we started to play, and Ryan Franz from just passed mid-field put one over their goalie, and the first half ended 2-1 in Barrie’s favour.

The second half started and Barrie did not rest on their lead, they came out fighting.  Our team played well, however, we did not bring our “A” game.  An unfortunate rush had their player slide into our goalie and Haider was hurt, too hurt to return to the game, but he showed his support and stayed until the end of the game.  We hope he is well, and returns to our line up soon.  A weak play in their end allowed the Barrie team to break out with speed and a few mistakes later and they had a break away and a goal.  Now a 3-1 lead.

A large field, means a lot of running, good hard passes and good positioning.  I hope we have learned our lesson, and for the rest of the season will start hard, strong effort through the whole game and capitalize on opportunities to score.  I’m sure that next week we will come out fighting against Oak Ridges and the final will be in our favour.  Good effort team. (Adamo Sansalone)

BU11 Black
Glen Shields 1 Barrie 0.

Glen Shields dominated this game from the start and were better in every department than the Barrie team. The score line does not reflect the play and the team will be working on its finishing over the next practices.

In all, the players stuck to the game plan and were well organized in defence and moved the ball quickly through the mid to the forwards. Another resolute performance from this first year team resulting in a second consecutive shut out and an early season top of the table spot.

GU12 Red
Our girls came out against Whitby controlling the game with numerous crosses but had some difficulty finishing.  The game was tied 0:0 at the end of the first half.  With some adjustments and a stronger focus, we came out in the second half completely dominating the game, scoring 5 goals and playing a more organized and controlled game.  We showed good team balance with every player contributing to a well played second half.  We are now the only team in our division to win our first three games.

GU12 Black
We won the game against Innisfil 1-0. We definitely dominated the game and most of the time the ball was in their half. Our goalie was very bored for most of the game. We had so many chances to score but we were only able to put the ball in the net once. The goal we scored came from a lot of hustle, a very nice pass from Sabrina D’Amario, and an amazing shot from Lexi Quint. (Haddas Lederman)

BU12 Black
League Leaders Continue to Dominate
A total team effort was put forward by all the players as the boys came up with a strong performance to beat their opponents 6-0. The score was kept respectable by a heroic effort by the Toronto Eagles goalie and many near misses in a slippery rain-soaked field. This game was an excellent tune up for our upcoming Ontario Cup weekend in Kitchener, going into the competition as the first place team in our CSL division (undefeated at 3-0) with two wins at home. Scoring came from 6 different players, including defenders, midfielders and forwards once again proving the importance of all players contributing to the team's success. After a recent tournament semi-final letdown, the boys seemed extra inspired to prove that they are a dominant team and continue to earn respect from their peers. Other motivation came from our team captain, who recently suffered a major injury, with his presence at the game and support for his teammates - another example of team spirit and togetherness. We wish the boys continued success and with this positive spirit, determination and hard work, we are confident that the aspired results will follow.

GU14
On Wednesday June 4th,2008  the GU 14 Sun Devils won their 3d game in a row by beating Scarborough United 2-0. GU 14 remains undefeated, with a record of 3-0-0. We had control, and possession for most of the game. Goal number came from an excellent cross shot from the left wing by Antonina, and the second goal was assisted by Antonina’s cross and Maria tapped the ball in the net. We were able to keep the score 2-0, by our defence who played really well. We all put in a great effort for that win! (Andria Katsios)
Our Schedule for next week: Monday June 9 at Aurora and Wednesday June 11 hosting Markham at Dufferin District 1.

BU15
Glen Shields 1 Pickering 3
Glen Shields 93s went into their second CSL Level 3 game of the schedule looking to find the winning formula after faltering at home to Woodbridge in the season opener back on May 21.  The visitors to DD2 this week, Pickering Xtreme, arrived full of confidence after thrashing Sudbury 8-0 at the weekend.

Pickering were on top during the early exchanges as the Sun Devils struggled to find any control in midfield.   Too many free kicks were being conceded in dangerous positions as the referee showed his intention to penalize any hint of arms or hands in a challenge; Pickering made one of these free-kicks count at the 18 minute mark, with a cross from 25 yards out on their wide-left eluding the Sun Devils’ ‘keeper and defenders at the far post and being nudged back across the goal area to be netted from close range.

Sun Devils thought they had equalized in the 23rd minute as Jonathan Almeida’s flighted free-kick from 25 yards out on the right was bundled home by the efforts of a posse of players, only to be ruled offside.  Pickering came close again at 27 minutes when a fierce shot from 25 yards out was palmed clear by ‘keeper Michael Scavone for a corner-kick,.  Pickering ended the half in control and Sun Devils were fortunate to be only one goal in arrears.

HALF-TIME SCORE:  0-1

Some positional changes and substitutions for the Sun Devils to start the second-half appeared to have made little difference as Pickering again looked the more likely to score.  The Sun Devils’ ‘keeper did well to thwart to block a fast break down the right at the 53 minute mark, but could do little some four minutes later as the visitors finished another two-on-one rush with a shot from their right-winger from just inside the box.

Anthony Colella forced a good save from the Pickering goaltender at the 58 minute mark as the Sun Devils tried to make a comeback, but Pickering went 3-0 up on 65 minutes as a corner-kick from their left was netted with an unopposed header from the edge of the 6-yard box.

As the game entered the final 15 minutes, the Sun Devils enjoyed their best spell creating a number of opportunities and the Pickering ‘keeper was brought into action to twice deny Alex Gabriele and then Emil Cohen in the space of just two minutes.  A breakthrough finally arrived with just 7 minutes remaining as Anthony Colella  was illegally charged and held  on the edge of the goal area and Paul Lippa converted the resulting penalty.   Hopes of a last-ditch comeback were briefly raised, but it was a case of “too little, too late” from the Sun Devils, who now fall to a disappointing 0-0-2 in league play for the new season.

BU17
Another Home Victory for the BU17 team, with a 4 – 1 win over the Toronto Eagles.

The players came prepared and focused for this match.  We had control of the game right from the opening whistle.  We maintained ball possession and rarely gave up a 50/50 ball.  Our back 4 did a great job of holding off any attack from Toronto. Toronto did a poor job of covering the outside midfielders and we took advantage of this, with our midfielders distributing the balls to the outside flanks.  We went up 2 - 0 in the first half and we completely frustrate Toronto with our Ball possession and quick touches.

The 2nd half was no different and we scored another 2 goals. Toronto got one back in the 80th minute of play.

Final:  4 – 1 for GSSC

BU18
Game Tuesday
The U18 Black played their third game on Tuesday June 3rd, vs. Darlington away under rainy, slippery conditions.

The Sun Devils started out aggressively by moving the ball well, distributing it out to the wings and at times playing through the middle and cutting up the defence.
The team had their chances to put a goal but most of the shots were blocked by Darlington defence.  The Sun Devils looked like playing more organized football than the opponents since their game plan seemed to be playing long balls to their forwards. Around the 20 minute Darlington scored from a free-kick which was deflected from our wall. 1-0

After the goal the Sun Devils pushed on and Matthew Annecchiarico tied the game with a shot after receiving a nice diagonal ball from Anthony Campos. 1-1

In the second half the Sun Devils tried to capitalize early putting pressure on Darlington and were rewarded by two beautiful goals within 10 minutes. Patrick Di Lecce scored the second goal dribbling past three players, finding an opening inside the box and placed the ball well to the far post. 1-2

A couple of minutes later, Danile Nyarko passed the ball on the right side to Joseph Figliomeni who passed the defender and crossed to it nicely and Robert Macchia put it to the net with a powerful header. 1-3

After scoring the second goal for some reason the team thought that the game was over. By the help of referee (not giving the foul done to Mark W.) the game continued, Matthew Nugara did not come out aggressively and Darlington scored their second goal. 2-3

Although this goal gave hope to the opponents, it was our give-away to let them tie the game due to the positional, communicational mistakes. 3-3

The opponents continued to pressure by playing long balls behind the defence as Sun Devils were stunned and then comes their fourth and fifth goal. 5-3

Near the end of the game with five minutes left, Darlington was close to score another goal which was saved by Mark Waldhausen on the line that turned out to be a counter-attack. A curved cross ball from Alp Gokgoz left Matthew Annecchiarico one on one with their goalie. He hit the ball second time to the back of the net. 5-4
Last minute efforts to tie the game were not enough so the Sun Devils got the first and (I hope) the last loss of the season.

Game Thursday
The U18 Black played their fourth game on Thursday June 5th, vs. West Toronto Ukraine at home under foggy, humid and wet weather.

The Sun Devils had a discussion prior to the game regarding what went wrong during their last game and they were agreed to fix the problems.

West Toronto Ukraine who beat Oshawa Kicks 3-1 didn’t have 11 players. They started with 9 players and after 10 minutes they played the remaining time with 10 players.

Nevertheless, the Sun Devils played the game with the composure and discipline throughout the match. Almost all players performed well as they were supposed to.
The Sun Devils defeated West Toronto Ukraine 9-0, increasing to 7 points within the league.
Although it was a nice win, the team needs to improve some areas such as penalty kicks. If this was a close game, missing two penalty shots would cost you points.

Statistics of the game:

U18 has 21 shots in which 17 of them were on target.

Jordan Jesus – 3 goals
Matthew Annecchiarico – 2 goals, 1 assist
Patrick Di Lecce – 1 goal, 4 assists
Mark Ganhao – 1 goal
Keith Boar – 1 goal
Robert Macchia – 1 goal, missing penalty shot
Mark Waldhausen – 4 assists
Daniel Nyarko -  2 assists
Jordan Pontes – 1 assist
Rene - missing penalty shot

U21 Women’s
U-21 ‘Lady Sun Devils’ Win 3rd Straight to remain undefeated
With a 2 game winning streak on the line the Glen Shields Sun Devils U21 women’s team had their home opener on Monday June 2nd against Oshawa Kicks 87.  The girls were prepared by Coach Tony Ciamarra’s visualization emails, pre-game talk and coach Paul’s new football warm up.   Prior to the start of the game many members of the team showed great character.  Amanda Perreira made a sacrifice for the team by starting in net. Other girls continued to run and play to the best of their ability despite having played numerous games for their high school teams earlier on in the day.

With a few controversial calls to start off the game the Sun Devils persisted and continued to dominate over their opponents. Defender Maria Procopio was called upon to start the game as forward, along with forward Nicole Romano. The duo applied constant pressure eventually leading to the first goal of the game. The goal came from the edge of the 18 yard box as forward Maria Procopio capitalized with her second goal of the season with a cracker of a shot. With the first half almost expired, the Sun devils had a sudden breakdown due to miscommunication. Oshawa was able to take advantage of the mistake, scoring and tying the game at one. However, shortly after, the Sun Devils earned  a corner kick. Forward Julia Dell’Aquila sailed a long ball to defender Angela Robibero who managed to get a touch on the ball and blast it into the back of the net from close range.

Leading the game 2-1 after the first half the Sun Devils knew that in order to maintain their lead they would have to continue their strong play into the second half.  With relentless efforts from defenders Alex Borg, Stacey Jackson, Catherine Ciamarra, Jasmine Bakos and Amanda Perreira the Sun Devils protected the lead and cleared any free  ball in front of  goalie Amanda McMillan who had started in goal in the second half.  Sweeper Sari Mogul’s solid quarterbacking of the defense provided a calming influence to the team. With the score still 2-1 halfway through the second half, the midfielders showed persistence and determination both up and down the field lead by Alyssa Fenuta, Daniela Robibero, Alicia Gallo and Tynisha Hibbert. With 20 minutes left in the game forward Nicole Romano’s overpowering speed led her past the Oshawa defenders and their goalkeeper scoring her first goal of the season and securing the 3-1 win for the Sun Devils. Thanks to call up Chelsey Maidment from our sister GU-17 team who once again added to the team’s offensive threat. Chelsey hit 2 posts and was unlucky not to have scored.

It was an overall solid team victory with plenty of action to delight the home crowd at Dufferin District # 2, the team’s home field.  “Overall the lady Sun Devils had the lion’s share of  possession of the ball using space effectively and taking the ball wide throughout the game in Coach Tony’ s opinion”.

We will see everyone on Thursday night for our practice in preparation for our next game on Saturday June 7/08. Starting at 12:00 Noon, Against Sault Ste. Marie Croatia.

Thought for the week from Angelica & Christina:

Risks

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental
To reach out for another is to risk involvement
To expose your feelings is to risk exposing your true self
To place your ideas & dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss
To love is to risk not being loved in return
To live is to risk dying
To hope is to risk despair
To try is to risk failure
But risk we must, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing and is nothing
Only a person who risks is free…
Lets continue to take risks as a team & as individuals!
