The BU8 Red team played away Monday night to cross town rivals Woodbridge. The boys played a strong game limiting Woodbridge to just one shot, while continuing to develop their passing game. The boys scored 2 goals in the first half, before coming out strong in the second half and scoring an additional 4 goals. (Tom Kiatipis)

YRSL game vs. Newmarket Red:
We saw our boys play their best first half yet. It was Sun Devils domination in the first 20 minutes going up 2-0; the U8 boys were pressing hard and created many scoring chances. Our defending was strong but near the end of the first half we got caught watching the ball as a forward from the other team dribbled passed a few of our players and went in to score. Coming off the field leading 2-1 our confidence was high but it got the best of us. In the 2nd half we let the other team beat us to the ball too often and so winning back possession got really difficult. When we had the ball we crowded it and our frustration mounted. Newmarket came back with two more unanswered goals for a 2nd half that was turned on its head for the Sun Devils.
It was a hard loss on the boys but they showed good sportsmanship and we put smiles back on their faces with some jumbo Freezies from the parents. At our practices this week we talked about all the right things to do in our next game. The boys had lots of fun working hard on passing, receiving, shooting and winning possession using speed and determination. We’re ready for our Cup game vs. Aurora this weekend. Go Sun Devils!

The boys had another strong outing last night as they beat Unionville 8-0! Their commitment to strong defence and team play grows stronger with every practice and game.

Sun Devils – Black: 1, Richmond Hill 5
Congratulations to our striker Jamie for scoring his first goal of the season! It was a well deserved goal, earned against what is probably the best team in our division. As his confidence continues to build, many more will come. Despite what appears to be a pretty one-sided score, the boys continue to improve and learn to work as a team. I’d like to close off by briefly mentioning that this week one of the boys on our team lost their dad, Brian Budd, an icon in Canadian soccer. He will be missed by us all.

Tough 3-0 loss at Patricia Kemp against the Class of U9 Division (Both) UMSC.
Everytime we have played them, we are tied at the break. Same thing happened last night. 0-0 at the break! Our players tired and with 15 minutes left, Unionville scored.
It deflated an already exhausted team. We had a good game plan and followed it well. Next up, King City. (Angelo LaMantia)

Glen Shields 4, Barrie 3
The GU10 Team traveled to Barrie’s Hickling field this week to play the Barrie girls with high hopes of extending our win record to 3. In the first few minutes of the game it appeared our hopes would come true when we scored thrice to take a commanding lead in the first half.
In the second half a determined Barrie team battled back with 2 more of their own, to make the game close however our girls returned to their defense first approach and fed the forwards with a great 3 way passing play to clinch the game. Barrie added another but our girls held the lead to win.
A strong effort was made by the entire team to play tough in the last half. Congratulations! GU10 record is now 3W-0D-1L. (Coach Joseph)

GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL BETWEEN, BEHIND AND AROUND! 3-2 Win!
Tonight’s win against Oak Ridges was a great example of how we work as a team. It was all us boys from opening whistle until the final whistle. We were first to every ball, and when we were not first we tackled hard and won every 50-50 ball. We played our game and came out winners! The hard work we are doing is really paying off. Three Cheers for Luca, Adamo and Marco for their fantastic goals. Way to go Guys!! (Marco Azevedo)

Glen Shields 1 Barrie 0.
Glen Shields dominated this game from the start and were better in every department than the Barrie team. The score line does not reflect the play and the team will be working on its finishing over the next practices.
In all, the players stuck to the game plan and were well organized in defence and moved the ball quickly through the mid to the forwards. Another resolute performance from this first year team resulting in a second successive shut out and an early season top of the table spot.

On the 10th of June 2008 the Glen Shields U12 girls had an amazing 3-0 victory. We had total control of the game as our players tore through our opponents South Simcoe. Goals by # 2, # 18 and # 19 won our team a fabulous victory. Our first goal, scored by Julia (#18) was incredible. The ball was brought up to the opponents net and tossed to the right goal post. Julia made a fantastic run behind the defenders fooling them and shot the ball. It slipped beside the goalie making the score 1-0. Our second goal, scored by Christina (#19) showed she really wanted to win.The ball was shot and a rebounce came off it. She was ready by the net and received the ball. She had a tough fight to retrieve the ball and score with her left foot into the right corner of the net. Our winning goal was by Ana (#2). Adriana (#11) received the ball giving Lexi (#7) a great open door pass. Lexi brought it down the line and crossed it. Ana made a great run through the defenders and scored. None the less Glen Shields owned this game. We were at the ball first, put in all our effort and each and every player had a fantastic game. (Christina Di Nola)

Monday's Game- On Monday June 9, our game against Aurora was very physical. All of us on the field played very hard and never gave up. We played smart, had nice passes and amazing moves! Unfortunately we lost 3-0 but those goals were just too hard to save. Our defense broke down a little but we held our heads up high and stayed positive. The forwards had many chances to score a goal but Aurora's goalie played amazing and had beautiful saves. The game was over but all of us held our heads up high and learned from our mistakes.
Wednesday: As we got on the field, we were on our toes and the whistle blew. Markham had the ball first but we had a fast start and as they passed back. One of our forwards intercepted the ball and we were controlling the game for a little while. The game was very physical and dirty but the ref and linesmen were fair. They got the first goal, it was very upsetting but we never gave up. There were lots of nice crosses and plays from both teams but for most of the game it was still 1-0 for Markham. In the last 10 minutes, one of our wingers Alex made a beautiful run and had the ball in the 18 yard box. As she was running with the ball the sweeper on Markham’s team fouled her and we got the penalty shot. It went straight into the top corner! Everyone cheered and eventually the game was over, 1-1.

Glen Shields BU14 Red 8 vs. Wexford 0
This week the Boys U14-Red played their 5th league game against Wexford. Even though the boys were missing a few players, they came prepared to win and maintain their record of being undefeated this season.
The defence, as they have done in previous matches, stayed strong and maintained another clean sheet. They allowed Wexford only two shots on net.
The goals where provided by Joey Cicchillo with four, Adam Toneguzzo, Anthony Novak, Arik Liberman and Jason Novo with one each.
The boys played an excellent passing game, creating numerous scoring chances. Wexford did not have much ball possession and had a difficult time passing centre field. A well deserved win.

GS BLACK 1 UMSC STRIKERS 1
GS 93s picked up their first league point of the season at home on June 6, to UMSC Strikers on a warm, muggy evening at Concord Thornhill North. In a fairly even first-half, the best chance fashioned by the Sun Devils came at the half-hour mark when Jonathan Almeida rose to meet Alex Gabriele’s corner-kick with a fierce header, but it was directed straight at the Unionville ‘keeper. The second-half began with the Sun Devils looking the more likely to score as Alex Pandovski’s dipping left-foot shot from 25 yards forced the ‘keeper to push the ball over the bar for a corner-kick. At the other end, Michael Scavone had to be quick of his line to thwart a powerful run by the Unionville #14. Strikers became increasingly physical as the half progressed and the referee had to caution several players. As the game entered the final 20 minutes, some good interpassing by Kevin Brice, Alex Pandovski and Emil Cohen produced an opening for Jonathan Almeida, but his well-hit rising shot from 10 yards out was somehow pushed away by the ‘keeper for a corner-kick. Against the run of play, the Sun Devils fell behind just a minute later after an attack broke down at centre and the UMSC #9 was set clear on the right, slipping the ball under the advancing ‘keeper following a full 30 yard run down the right flank. But the Sun Devils refused to quit and their perseverance was rewarded with just 7 minutes remaining as Jonathan Almeida’s free-kick from the wide-right was deflected in at the near post, the goal being awarded by the referee to Anthony Colellla.
Game # 2 AURORA STINGERS 1 GLEN SHIELDS 2
On a very hot Saturday morning (June 7) on the turf at Sheppard’s Bush, GS 93s dominated their CSLCup encounter with Aurora Stingers but were only able to convert two out of a hat load of chances; fortunately, this was enough to secure the win and progress to the next round.
Sun Devils had already come close with efforts by Kevin Brice, Jonathan Almeida and Anthony Ristich before eventually taking the lead in the 13th minute, Segaan Hobson’s low corner-kick from the right being turned into the far corner of the net by Jonathan Almeida from about 12 yards out. Sun devils continued to press and , but were almost caught out as the Aurora #9 on a rare break down the centre of the field beat the offside trap but his strong shot from 20 yards out was well handled by goalkeeper Michael Scavone. Peter Monteros saw his effort from close range hit the side-netting and Anthony Ristich put a 20 yarder inches past the post as Sun Devils were unable to increase their lead before half-time.
The second-half began in similar fashion, with Jonathan Almeida’s drive from 25 yards going just wide. Then good hustle by Anthony Ristich won the ball just inside the Aurora penalty area and his cross-shot towards the far post appeared to be turned in by Marcus Bernard as a defender challenged, but the referee adjudged that the ball had already crossed the goal-line. With a two-goal advantage, Sun Devils continued to press and Anthny Colella went close twice and Jonathan Almeida tried his luck with several long-range efforts. Out of the blue, Aurora reduced the arrears with twenty minutes remaining as their physical #9 again burst through down the centre to finish nicely from 20 yards out. Aurora briefly threatened again with a high 25 yarder that was comfortably dealt with by Michael Scavone despite the strong breeze, before the Sun Devils took control again but were unable to kill the game with a third goal.
Sun Devils will be away to Woodbridge Strikers in the next round.
Game # 3 GLEN SHIELDS 1 AJAX STRIKERS 3
On a humid Monday evening (June 9) at DD#2, Sun Devils fell to a disappointing 1-3 loss to visiting Ajax Strikers. Ajax were on top from the start, finding lots of space in midfield to work and pressuring the Sun Devils defence with testing lofted passes down the centre, frequently beating the offside trap. But Michael Scavone was in superlative form in goal, denying the Ajax #11 in two clear breakaways and controlling his area well in the face of a barrage of crosses and corner-kicks. Sun Devils had a great chance to score just before half-time as Anthony Ristich found the ball at his feet just 5 yards out following a corner-kick, but somehow put his shot high over the crossbar.
Ajax continued their physical approach to start the second-half, but the referee’s decisions were oddly often going against the Sun Devils; a dubious free-kick awarded on the Ajax right was only partially cleared and a dipping shot from just outside the box at centre sneaked in just under the crossbar to give Ajax the lead with just 4 minutes gone in the half. Sun Devils struggled to mount a response, but Ajax continued to dominate and forced Michael Scavone into a further string of crucial saves to keep the game close. With just 11 minutes remaining, Ajax increased their lead following another dubious free-kick awarded on their left; the high cross from about 35 yards out appeared to elude both forwards and defenders alike as it went second-bounce into the far corner of the net. Sun Devils hit back within a minute as Jonathan Almeida’s surging run to the right corner was followed by a perfect cross to the far post where Alex Pandovski netted from the edge of the goal area. Any hopes that Sun Devils could force a grandstand finish were dashed just two minutes later as Ajax scored their third following another break down the centre.

G.S continued to dominate throughout second half and were able to put in two more goals scored by Natalie Ghazalian and Chantel Azevedo. The final score was 5-0, and was a fairly easy win. The Boys tonight defeated West Toronto 10-0 in a one sided affair with little or no opposition. ‘We wanted to redeem ourselves for losing on Tuesday night against Darlington in Darlington 5-4 when we were winning 3-1 with 15 minutes to go and had a complete melt down especially my performance which I fully take full responsibility for’ said Mathew Nugaro.
Coaches Quote: ‘Not being with the team this week, allowed the players to play on their own and show their maturity. They did so by taking responsibility for their performances…having lost 5 points this season forces them to make sure they defeat the opponents on the return leg’. ‘As for the Ontario Cup, I can say from all accounts the players played their best in the second half vs. Oakville Blue Devils losing 3-1 late in the game giving away a penalty shot when trying to push forward to equalize. Oakville Blue Devils went on to advance through the group stages.

U21 Men’s
The U18’s travelled across Maple to play Vaughan Azzurri at Maple CC on Sunday and lost 5-2 in the last 15 minutes when their legs gave way. The majority of the players had returned from playing 2 Ontario Cup games the same day and 2 the previous day on Saturday. The game was in complete control with the team being unlucky to be down at half-time 2-1. Just after the start of the second half Leron hit a 30 yd shot off the cross bar and a few minutes later Mark Waldhausen equalled the score at 2-2 when he turned and bent the ball into the far corner from 25 yds out. With the legs cramping up and fatigue setting in late in the second half the boys could not hold off the U21’s any longer and allowed 3 unanswered goals.
The Player of the Game Jordan Jesus for playing out of position and never having any coaching at right fullback. He played well enough to cause the left winger great difficulty in getting past him throughout the game having played two games earlier the same day.
Coaches Quote ‘The performance tonight shows the character the players have to be able to play four games at their own age group followed by committing themselves to perform against U21’s later in the evening and getting down to business. No complaints just complete commitment which shows the future looks bright for the players and the Club’

U21 Women’s
High 5 for the GU-21 Sun Devils
The GU-21 Sun Devils rolled into Whitby’s home turf, Consumers Park on Thursday June 12th /08 for a Game against the Iroquois riding on a high note. Coach Tony told the girls that; “it’s never an easy task to walk in on a Whitby Team’s home field and take away a Win without a major league struggle ”. A Battle it was…This game marked the return of striker Jessica Ciamarra from her knee surgery. Playing in her first game since May of 2007, Jessica was unlucky not to have scored a couple of goals in her debut return. Also returning to the team was central defender, Charlotte Chan-Lee otherwise known as “the Great Brick Wall”, a delightful return and a welcomed sight for the entire team.
The Sun Devils took the early lead when Speedster Nikkie Romano found the back of the net in the first 10 minutes of the contest. As the Sun Devils showed great tenacity right from the start of the game, however the Iroquois were not about to give away anything for free. They attacked the Sun Devils End of the field and carried the play for most of the first half forcing Glen Shields to defend.
At half time Coach Tony and Coach Paul strategize and retooled the line up in an effort to regain the lost shape and possession at mid field. The territorial play began to change and within 20 minutes Samantha Rose drove to the net and scores with a bullet shot from outside the 18 yard box. The momentum had now shifted again to the Sun Devils and with almost 15 minutes left in the game Julia Dell’Aquila strikes with the third goal of the game to seal the 5th win of the season for the Sun Devils. Amanda McMillan recorded the shut out.
The coaches were very pleased with the effort and of course who doesn’t relish a 3-0 victory.
A Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads.
The focus shifts to Monday Night’s away game Vs. Vaughan Azzurri at LeParc Field, game time 9:00 PM. (www.TonyCiamarra.com)
Taking Care of Business, while working overtime!
The GU-21 Sun Devils marched onto the Concord/Thornhill field on Saturday June 7/08 for a 12 noon match against the visiting Sault Ste. Marie Croatia team. With only two players on the bench the girls fought hard throughout the game. The heat was a factor and the ladies were extremely exhausted.
Maria Procopio playing at sweeper, Angela Robibero, the central defender and Catherine Ciamarra with Stacy Jackson as defenders were like “the four thorough bread horses” of the game. These ladies hustled the entire game to preserve the shut out recorded by Amanda McMillan and Luciana DiPaula who split goaltending duties in this game. Christina Allegretto, Alyssa Fenuta, Angelica Merocchi, Tynisha Hibbert and Alicia Gallo took care of the midfield duties.
The forwards were Julia Del’Aquila, Nikki Romano and Natalie Ghazalia. The coaches were very pleased with the effort and the 3-0 victory. All the scoring came in the first half of the game with Julia scoring twice and Christina sealing the match with her second goal of the season.
The focus shifts to Thursday night’s away game in Whitby against the Iroquois is a kick-off for 9:00 PM.
