Glen Shields Sun Devils 10 -Thornhill 0
In another solid showing by our boys, the Sun Devils got on the scoreboard early, scoring within the first minute of the game, en route to a decisive victory at home versus Thornhill. Our boys are demonstrating improved chemistry on offence, with a greater emphasis on using each other to create better scoring opportunities. The defence worked diligently to allow just one shot on goal, while creating numerous opportunities for our forwards.

YRSL Cup game vs. Aurora:
BU8 black lost to Aurora today 3-0.
We did well to keep the ball in there end but we had a hard time making chances to score with only 2 good shots on goal.
YRSL League Game vs. Kleinberg
Our boys tied 3-3. They worked hard and pressed hard all game long to successfully defend OUR HOUSE! They did so many things right and nearly won the game with two close chances at the end that could have made it 5-3 (we hit a post and kicked into their goalies hands on a last minute scramble in front of their net). Our boys kept it exciting with their high energy play but also with some great skill and smarts. We saw many give-and-go plays just like we worked on in practice and we saw our boys get around Kleinberg’s defence with only three passes from our GK to our defense to our forward who shot on goal. It was the fastest attack our team has ever put together.
Congratulations to: Adrian Morana our ‘man of the match’ for his constant pressure and never-give-up attitude, to Sam Brenner for his speed in stopping a breakaway in the dying seconds, to Netanel Hazan for his first goals, to Nathan Laraia for his PK goal and a ‘Happy Birthday first assist’ to John Goudis who made a pro-like flick pass to send our forwards on a breakaway for our third goal of the game. Great things are happening with GSSC BU8 Black, Go Sun Devils!
The Girls played their first league cup game and defeated Unionville Black 7-0 with complete dominance.
YRSL League Game vs. King City
Disappointing 4-0 loss to King City this week. The players did not show up and still kept the game close until late. They were not discipline enough. We end up beating ourselves with our sloppy play. King City is a first
Year team stacked with 3 ex-Aurora Rep players and ALL-Star select players.
Although the bad showing this past week, I believe we can beat them next time if we play the game I know we can.
BU9 boys red had their first cup game Saturday. They beat Oak Ridges 11-0
YRSL League Game vs. Markham.
Our boys had us a little nervous yesterday. 2 minutes into the second half we were down 3-2. Our boys forgot their assignments and were not playing as a team. At that point the boys realized what made them successful to this point. Ball control, strong defence and lots of communication. The boys turned things around and ended up beating Markham 7-3. Our record is now 5-0 and climbing. Great heart by the boys to fight back. I’m proud of them!
Score: Glen Shields 0, Woodbridge 5
On the 2-day consecutive game home stand, a tired GU10 team played our rivals Woodbridge, who were second only to Aurora in our division last year. In a game filled with injuries for our team, our opponents bested us, 5-nil. Included in the injuries were our 4 of our 6 starters, including our GK, who’ll be out 6 weeks with a 2nd degree shoulder separation!
Even though being decimated by injuries throughout the game our team continued playing with heart, never quitting or giving up until the final whistle was blown.

Score: Glen Shields 1, Markham 3 (CUP Game)
The GU10 Team put in a commendable effort in this past weekend’s Cup game against a determined opponent. We started strongly and kept play in their end for the first few minutes however, with the ball shifting quickly from the right side to the left, a Markham attacker was open long enough to place a pass to a player who’d managed to sneak in behind our defense.
On what looked like an inadvertent hand ball, high on the arm, Markham was awarded a penalty kick. Michelle, our Goalkeeper came up with a big save which lifted the moral of the team. With strong play from our mid-field, we fed a pass to our streaking forward who outran their defense and placed the ball neatly in the corner, 1-1 before the half.
In the second half there were lots of 1v1 battles however Markham was able to capitalize on kick from outside the 18 yard box, 2-1 with approximately 15 minutes left to play. Knowing there was a chance to equalize, we committed players forward however with just a few minutes left we missed a clearing attempt on our goal line and the ball just barely crossed the goal line, 3-1 final.
A strong effort was made by the entire team to come back from a deficit and continue playing with heart.

Glen Shields vs. Unionville
What BEAUTIFUL day for a soccer game. The Glen Shields Sun Devils were trying to put their winning percentage over 500. The game started like many of the games we played before. The Sun Devils had an OK start. But then, out of nowhere Unionville scores their first goal. At first, the shock set in but then the Sun Devils knew they had to forget about the goal and even up the score. They knew they just had to win that game and that’s exactly what they did .Unionville played well but it wasn’t a match for the Sun Devils. The final score was Sun Devils 3 and Unionville 1.
Overall, we had a good game. We were passing well, we challenged the ball and did not let them get a lot of chances. The team seams to be getting better and better throughout the season. The team is starting to gel and that has improved our passing and team play. (Franz & Ryan)
We tied Unionville 2-2 this week. They are one of the leagues strongest teams. Girls played a solid game. First half was very even and ended at 2-2. We controlled second half with much of the play in their end, but could not score.
Glen Shields 1 – Scarborough Bilzzard 0.

The 96 Girls had started the season off slowly and unfortunately, Whitby was there to bear the brunt of the girl’s anger. On Tuesday, 17th, 08, several “hoorahs” broke out from Wade Gate Park as the Sun Devils Girls worked their magic. The girls overpowered Whitby 8 - 1. Any spectator could see that the girls were ready to play; scoring their first goal in the first 3 minutes. Nikki Grossi crossed a beautiful ball from the center of the field, which Lexi blasted in the net.
The gloomy day did not effect the girls as they scored their 2nd goal. Sierra Caza pounded the ball in towards Whitby’s net, and easily scored from a simple yet perfect rebound.
Unfortunately, Whitby scored with a great shot from outside of the penalty box. Sierra Caza responded with another goal from outside of the penalty box with seven minutes left till the half time.
In those seven minutes, the girls scored three more goals! Sierra scored a goal with a perfect cross by Ana, Ana scored by a stunning cross by Selina, and the sixth goal was prepared by Nikki with a cross and with Julia dribbling up the field.
When Kobi was giving his famous half time speech, he admits that all of the goals “were superb”. Coach Altaf admits “the defense is playing fantastic”. Our cheerleader Emily kept our spirits up.
Sadly, Sab “Rocky” got into a tangle head butt with a Whitby player and received most of the damage - an injury over the eye which will recover in a week the doctor declared. Her eyelid is a bit swollen.
The team decided to pick it up at the end and score a goal in the last four minutes of the game. Sierra Caza worked her magic for the fourth time.
Suddenly, Lauren Botnick our incredible goal keeper was launched into the game playing forward! She was a great forward, chasing the ball down like a hound.
The whole team was surprised when Sierra scored another goal in the last thirty seconds of the game, making it her fifth goal, or, as the team calls it, “a Sierra plus one”.(Celina Sarangi)
Team played well, jumped on Oshawa early and played well. They were not strong, but I think we caught them on an off night. Chris scored 4 goals in a 7-1 win!
Just on our way home from Michigan competing in the college showcase tournament. Two words to recap this weekend, Good and Disappointed. Good that we showed well and were definitely the best team in our group and we had a lot of college coaches looking at some of our players. A number of coaches complemented us on our team and were interested to know about our club. It was a good experience for the team and there were a lot of positives. Disappointing since we were the best team in our group and we are going home. We could not finish and we gave up garbage goals. We played a 4-3-3 and were all over our opponents but could not finish. In all fairness to the players we were on 2 hours sleep for our 2 Saturday games and this definitely took its toll. We as the best team are on our way home and the worst team goes to the final, doesn't make sense but so it goes in soccer, you have to make your own breaks and we didn't.
Another Away Victory for the BU18 Black team, with a 2-1 win over West Rouge.
Knowing that their coach was away the players came to the game well prepared and focused. The Sun Devils started well, keeping the ball position, winning the tackles, distributed the ball to the wingers quickly and accurately.
Towards the middle of first half time the ball played quickly by Alp Gokgoz to Mark Ganhao who rolled a 50/50 ball between their goalie and Matthew Annecchiarico. As a result his persistent pressure on goalie and his speed, Matthew Annecchiarico forced him to make a mistake and put the ball to the back of the net.Anthony, Mark G., Casper, Patrick and Keith took shots on the net but the team didn’t capitalize on opportunities.
At the beginning of the second half, Sun Devils struggled for a while but came out strong and scored the second goal from a corner kick. Patrick Di Lecce crossed the ball from corner kick, Rene DeZorzi headed the ball which was saved by goalie but Jordan Jesus netted the rebound. Although Sun Devils created a number of opportunities, a lost ball in their end and long ball behind the defense cost us a goal late in the second half.
We showed good team balance with every player contributing to a well played game.
With a record of 3-1-1 Sun Devils U18 Black team will be playing against West Toronto Ukraina next week.

U21 Men’s
Lost 3-1 to Toronto Supra…the players held the opposition off until the last 20 minutes where the experience of the older players of the Supra paid off in capitalizing on our defensive errors.
This past weekend the GU21 Women’s Team took part in the 2008 OWSL League Cup Round Robin. Entering the weekend 1st in the Central Region Division and fresh off a 3-0 win against Whitby, expectations were high. As CGSL League Cup Champs 2 years running the girls proved that they could dominate at that level, but did they have what it takes to be successful in the women’s league?
The first game against Barrie saw a slow start for our Sun Devils. After a brilliant Buffon style save from Amanda McMillan in the 18th minute of the 1st half, the score remained tied after 30 minutes of play. Although dominating play, the Sun Devils couldn’t put together a goal. They came close, with a few posts, including one by Nicole Romano in the last minute, from a brilliant set up by Angela Robibero and Christina Allegretto. Despite having to settle for the draw, the result handed goal keeper Amanda McMillan her 3rd shut-out of the season.
The next game against Mississauga Falcons didn’t see much improvement for the team. Extreme weather conditions and controversial calls made it difficult for the team to stay focused. An early “offside” goal from the Mississauga Falcons changed the pace of the game. With this change of momentum, the Falcons capitalized scoring two additional goals. The last 10 minutes of the game saw the team regain composure and begin to reapply pressure. A beautiful corner kick from Christina Allegretto and a header-goal from Charlotte Chan-Lee gave added confidence for the closing minutes of the game. The game continued to get rough resulting in another controversial call that should have resulted in the ejection of the Falcons goalkeeper after charging Christina Allegretto outside of her box. At the end of 60 minutes of play the Falcons managed to hand the Sun Devils their first loss of the 2008 season, with some added injuries.
The final game saw the Sun Devils meeting the Unionville Strikers for the first time this season. Unsure of what to expect and with a team full of exhausted players they took to the pitch. With an unfortunate take down in their box that resulted in a penalty shot, the Sun Devils found themselves trailing behind by 0-1 score. Entering the second half, a beautiful clearance by Sari Mogul allowed Christina Allegretto to score for the draw. With ten minutes remaining in the game Samantha Rose capitalized on a switching play from Daniella Robibero, Alyssa Fenuta and Catherine Ciamarra. The Sun Devils managed to hang on for the win and finished the day on a positive note with a final score of 2-1.
Despite their efforts, the 4 points were not enough to qualify for the next round.
Focus now returns to league play with their next match up Monday, June 16, 2008 against Vaughan Azzurri. (Alyssa & Michael Fenuta)
GU-21 Sun Devils Streak halted, Now; 5 & 1 in League play
The GU-21 Sun Devils arrived at LeParc field on Monday June 16th /08 for a Game against Vaughan still in a funk after the weekend set back in the OWSL cup tournament... the 1 win 1 tie and 1 loss (4 points) was not sufficient for the team to advance to the next round of the league cup, unlike the Azzurri of Italy.
This game was uncharacteristic of this year’s team, where it was evident that the opponent was more aggressively determined to sacrifice themselves for each other. Perhaps the fact that the 2 Robibero sisters were playing against their former mates added drama to this contest.
A soft goal early in the game did not help in settling the team down and another quick goal from a deflection off a Sun Devil defender did little for the team’s psyche. The short field was a factor as were other uncontrollable variables. With about 15 minutes to go in the first half Christina Allegretto managed to cut the deficit in half beating the adventurous Vaughan goalkeeper to the ball and sliding it past her.
The Sun Devils took the field in the second half trailing 1-2 and showed some positive signs in attacking the opponents net. Chances were created and as many were squandered as the Sun Devils tried for the equalizer...However at approximately the 30 min mark of the second half, on a counterattacking play from the left side of the 18 yard box a 3rd goal was given up and the Sun Devils were unable to respond. The game ended 1-3 in favor of the arch rivals.
This was a “wake up call” for the team as a whole. A reminder that every game should be contested vigorously.
The focus shifts to preparing for the next game set for Thursday July 26/08. Game time 9:00 PM. At Dufferin District #1.
