The girls played a great game; unfortunately we didn’t get the results we hoped for. The game ended in a 2 -0 win for Richmond Hill #2. Everyone played hard and in spite of the loss we’re starting to see amazing improvement in all the players.

YRSL game vs. Vaughan:
This game started off with a quick goal by Vaughan and our boys got intimidated and eventually frustrated coming off the field losing 7-0 at half time.  We knew we had a really big mountain to climb in the 2nd half so we decided to focus on keeping Vaughan out of our end and on scoring one goal.  Our boys turned things around in the 2nd half and achieved our objectives.  The Sun Devils showed they were faster, stronger and tougher than Vaughan in the 2nd half and we held them to a 0-0 second half draw and our boys created 5 great scoring opportunities (one of which beat their goalie only to find the inside of the post and bounce out).  It felt like a long and tiring battle and in the final minutes our frustrations returned and we let Vaughan come back into our end to score 2 goals.

Many of our boys were upset at this loss and came up with these reasons for losing the game:  “The other team cheated”, “they were too rough”, “the referee was not fair”, and “their ball was too big”.

At practice this week we talked about why goals are scored and everyone started to realize that we lost for these reasons:  Lack of pressure (not being first to the ball), lack of support (not enough teamwork), and giving away possession.  We played some really fun small-sided games which reminded the boys how to stop the other team from scoring, how to win possession and how to work together as a team.  By the end of the week the team felt really good again and we can’t wait for next week’s game.

Great things are happening with GSSC BU8 Black, Go Sun Devils!

3-1 loss to Newmarket.  We let them off the hook.  We owned the 2nd half but poor finishing and lack of passing did the team in.

BU9 Red
Last night the Boys U9 Red team put its 5-0 record on the line against our toughest competition, the Richmond Hill A team.  Going into the game we knew that Richmond Hill played a very physical game, and were very good at moving the ball.  Our game plan was simple...first to the ball...don’t let up!  Each and every player on the Sun Devils rose to the challenge, and I am happy to report that the boys won 2-1.  It was an exciting game that saw us up 2-0 at half.  With about 5 minutes left Richmond Hill scored a goal off a mad scramble in front of our net.  They kept coming at us, but our defence and our exceptional goaltending by Tristan kept us ahead 2-1. I am so proud of each and every player on our squad with the effort they put forth.  Special mention to Ryan, Marco and Dan who left everything they had out on that field.  Their extra effort was evident to everyone watching the game!  Way to go boys!!!! GSSD GU10 – 1 vs. Newmarket Red – 0 (Record: 4W-0D-2L)

The Team traveled to Newmarket this week to face our opponent, Newmarket United (Red). Still reeling from the loss of our #1 goalie, to an extended injury suffered in our last game, our back-up courageously stood between the pipes. The game was a closely contested affair, however our girls had the most opportunities in the first half and pressured early and often, sending a clear message that we came to play, only unlucky with many chances in front of their net. The half ended in a 0-0 dead-lock.

Our opponent came out strongly in the second half, no doubt feeling the pressure of a possible defeat at home but the Sun Devils were prepared for this and withstood their attacking forwards with strong supported challenges in our end, often counter-attacking. On one such counter, with our centre-mid pushing forward to join the attack, she won the 1v1 battle in their right corner and passed laterally to a striker who cleverly relayed a pass to the open wing, where the one-timer found the top-right. Score 1-0

With minutes left to play, we effectively defended, preventing any deep penetration into our defensive end, with excellent clearances from our back four and defensively conscientious play by our strikers.

Congratulations on the win girls, played well by all!

Next 2 games:
Mon. June 30th (HOME) vs. UMSC Strikers
Mon. July 7th (AWAY) vs. South Simcoe
(Coach Joseph)

BU10 Black
Glen Shields vs. Thornhill
We won almost all of the 50/50 balls and made good through balls with our forwards running on to them.  Thornhill wasn’t much of a challenge to us and we ended up winning the game 9-1.  In the second half, the defense and forwards switched positions and Thornhill scored their only goal during this process.  Soon after, our goalie came out of net and played centre forward….he didn’t score but he came close.

That’s 3 wins in a row….let’s make it 4 next week when we play Richmond Hill!! (Alex Montesano)

An incredible week for the U12 Boys Black team.

CSL League Game
The boys played with great passion and determination against a tough Barrie Spirit team in a showdown for first place. Overcoming some recent injuries and illnesses, the boys pulled it together in a total team effort to post a 2-1 away win. With this win, we maintain our superiority over the other teams in our division with our undefeated record of 6-0-0 in the league and a +16 goal differential.

First Round CSL Cup
The boys won their first round CSL Cup game against Oak Ridges North at home with a score of 2-1. Although our boys owned most of the opportunities and possession, they overcame a weak visitors tying goal to persevere in the end. With this win we move on to face the higher-ranked Whitby Iroquois at home, which will provide a great challenge that the boys are looking forward to.

York Region District Player Development Program
The U12 District Program coached by Joe Schiraldi and managed by Cesare Tripodo, was established in October 2007 as an identification program used to identify players that demonstrated the ability to play at a higher level of soccer. Over 80 players were first selected and from October 2007 to May 2008, a number of indoor and outdoor training sessions were held to reduce the selection to a manageable size.
The U12 Boys Black team is proud to announce that of the remaining 25 players left in the 2008 U12 District Program, 8 players from our GS Sun Devils Black have been selected to participate in further training towards representing the 2008 U12 York Region’s District Team. We would like to congratulate these 8 players for their selection and thank all of the players for their hard work and participation in this program.

Glen Shields Red: 1 vs. Etobicoke: 0

This Wednesday Glen Shields played a good game against Etobicoke. In the first half the ball was slightly more in our half. When we did have the ball we were passing and spreading the ball wide. However we weren’t challenging the balls in the air. Our team was playing aggressive and applying pressure but our team was not shooting and finishing as much as possible. Defensively we were sometimes not closing down the offence. In the midfield we weren’t always looking up for the through pass and in the offence we weren’t cutting in soon enough with the ball. At the end of the first half everyone pulled themselves together with the result being a great goal.  The ball was crossed from the corner and the striker tapped it in. Towards the end of the game the other team started to loose intensity and our team was tired but had the desire to win the game. Overall Glen Shields played a good game. (Ocean Parr)

GU12 Black
On June 24 first placed Glen Shields Sun Devils played against second placed Etobicoke. This game was in Etobicoke in nice sunny weather. Our team came out as the victor of the match, the score was 2-1. Both of our goals were scored by Christina (19).

On the first goal there was a beautiful cross by Adriana (11) and a powerful shot by Christina that resulted in a goal.

On the second goal Christina dribbled with the ball past a few defenders and placed it past the goalkeeper and into the net. They were both beautiful goals.

Etobicoke’s Goal was the result of a good through ball that unfortunately got kicked into the net. Lauren played well and cut off many balls coming through. Twice the ball got past Lauren but Ariel (5) was there to save us the first time and Sienna saved us the second time.

The ref was blowing up every tackle and as we were a more physical team many kicks were against us. All in all it was a well played game by both teams but Glen Shields pulled ahead even further in the standings. (Alexa Quint)

Wednesday June 25th Glen Shield's third away game was lost to Unionville 2-1. G.S had a slow start, with Unionville picking up the lead in the first minute of play. G.S fought hard, and had a couple of chances wide from the net. G.S mostly dominated their half, and gave Unionville few chances at net. In a weak moment for G.S, at second half, Unionville took advantage and scored their second goal. A minute later a ball was sent up and crossed to Natalie Ghazalian, who volleyed the ball into the top corner. The rest of the game was again mostly dominated by G.S, who couldn't finish their chances. Our current record is 2-2-0.

The BU18 qualified for the next round of the CSL League Cup play by defeating Richmond Hill by a score of 2-1 in extra time. The boys played with only  two subs and a man down when Mark Ganhao was sent off for his second yellow card in the first half. The players rallied from behind down 1-0 to overcome the home advantage for Richmond Hill.

The players followed up their league cup play by defeating the West Toronto SC by a score of 5-0. This game puts the team in first play applying pressure on Richmond Hill, Darlington, NY Hearts Azzurri and our cross town rivals Woodbridge to keep up.

U21 Men’s
The U18’s have been dominating the starting positions with the U21 line-up and with only 11 players available for the game vs. Darlington the boys came up with a 4-4 tie coming back from behind and playing away from home. An achievement considering the players are playing 3-4 years up.
