Here is an update on our progress this week:

Monday:  6-1 Win versus Markham in an away game
Thursday:  5-2 Win versus Newmarket in a home game

A good effort by our boys once again, improving our record to 5-1-1, with 53 goals for and 21 goals against.  The team is sharpening up their skills for a big tournament in Georgetown next weekend.

3-0 loss to Vaughan.  We were in the game, the whole game. 2 bad goals from far out and a late Penalty did us in.  It was 1-0 with less than 10 minutes left and we
Were pressuring them but we could not put the ball behind their keeper.

BU9 Red
Boys streak has increased to 7!  The boys are continuing to work hard on communication and ball control.  They increased their winning streak to 7-0 beating Aurora 8-0!

GSSD GU10 – 2 vs. UMSC Strikers Red– 1 (Record: 5W-0D-2L)

The Team played host to the UMSC Strikers Red this week, in what was another injury ridden contest for our girls. With our back-up GK still bravely guarding between the pipes, even after hurt a finger in the warm-up, we took to the field. Half-way through the first half, feeling unable to continue and we were forced to use our third GK. Sensing our vulnerability, UMSC pressed their advantage, winning some crucial battles in the middle, resulting in a de-motivating first goal; however the girls stayed strong mentally and created a great three-way passing play to score a goal before the end of the half. The half ended in a 1-1 dead-lock.

The second half started with momentum on our side and we took full advantage of this to pop in another well played passing combination, finishing nicely high on their small but feisty goal-keep.
Defending well for the remaining 10 minutes, with quick counter attacks, we held our opponent scoreless, forcing them to the outside whenever they brought their numbers up offensively.
Final Score 2-1

Terrific game overcoming adversity to win girls, well done!

Next 2 games:
Mon. July 7th (AWAY) vs. South Simcoe
Mon. July 14th (HOME) vs. Collingwood

WHAT A COME BACK !
Tonight’s game was very important for both Sun Devils and Richmond Hill. Both teams were looking for a win to put them in 3rd place in the standings. It was 3 minutes into the game when we scored an own goal. Richmond Hill’s 1-0 lead did not last very long as we came back and tied the score. The game was getting very exciting when Richmond Hill came back and scored another goal in the second half. Glen Shields was not going to go home with a loss tonight so with 5 minutes left in the game we played our hearts out and tied it up 2-2.

We had a lot more chances than they did. We showed a lot of character and came back twice! Way to Come Back Boys (FRANKIE AZEVEDO)

Glen Shields 2 vs. Barrie 1

Our game against Barrie was tough and aggressive. Each team member worked hard to get the ball to our forwards to score.  It was a windy night and the ball was hard to shoot in the net without the wind taking the ball upwards.  Our forwards did not give up shooting.  Our defense did an awesome job of hustling back to be sure there were not many opportunities to shoot on our net.  Our goalie got hurt in the second half and our back up goalie had to go in net for the rest of the game.  Our defense and mid-fielder’s worked hard to keep the ball out of our half for almost the entire second half of the game.  We passed the ball well and our one touch of the ball had improved from last week.  We need to be reminded of how important it is to talk to each other on the field.  Talking with one another will improve our game.  We did score two goals to win the game, however we could have scored more goals had we been able to communicate better on the field. Robbie Tournament
Our boys poured it on after our slow start yesterday and played inspired soccer to beat Newmarket in the quarters (2-1) and totally outplayed a super Erin Mills team, but came up short losing in PK's. We finished tied with Erin Mills 1-1 after regulation, while hitting a crossbar and post on two set plays. We also scored a fantastic 5-way, one touch passing play goal, which the referee, in his opinion (and only his opinion), called back offside - this would and should have been a golden goal winning goal. We had the spectators from the Mississauga and Ajax game watching, who also felt that we were done wrong by the bad call. On the positive side, I would like to congratulate our boys for a super effort and great determination this weekend in beating 4 teams that are all ranked in higher divisions than us - a foreshadowing of where this team deserves to be and will next year !

Parental View of the Robbie Tournament Performance
To my knowledge, the Robbie semi-finals is the best that a Glen Shields team of this age has performed in a MAJOR tournament. So you will understand if I tell you am NOT disappointed at the outcome. Of course, the boys deserve credit for an accomplishment that probably surpassed their parents accomplishments in sports at this age. But they did not do it alone. It takes a lot of selfless dedication to coach and manage the team, and very superb judgment calls based on the circumstances. At yesterday’s semi-final game I saw at least 3 key changes by Anthony that, in my view, showed that he knows his players and their unique skills, and used this to turn the game in our favour when it counted: he moved a key defender to striker, put on the right player mix suitable for this overtime where Glen Shields dominated; and made the best selection for penalty kickers. For what it’s worth, I thought the decisions were impressive and brilliant, calls. The loss was truly unlucky.
Excellent job and congratulations (and thanks) to Anthony and Luc and Carmen.

We won at home game last night with a score of (1-0) against Weston Wolves.
This win puts us in sole procession of first place with a 7-0-0 record - coming off a great Robbie tournament (semi-finals).

The U-14 Boys Red Team played their sixth game of the season against Kleinberg Lions. This was the boy’s first season game in a month but besides the fact the came out hard and popped in a goal in the first five minutes. After that they laid back and thought it would be an easy game but then realized it wasn't once Kleinberg put on the pressure and had many chances in the first half. The second half it was the other way around and Kleinberg came out and scored in the first minute, but then the boys took control of the game and had many chances in the second half. This game was a well earned tie away from home 1-1.

Glen Shields vs. Barrie Spirit

Last night the U-17 girls played at their home field of Dufferin District against Barrie. Although we dominated from the start of the game with plenty of scoring opportunities, the girls were not able to buy themselves a goal. There were not many players on the Barrie bench but they were able to score two goals against Glen Shields.

Minutes after the second goal, Natalie Page left her position from defence and carried the ball up. With a cracker of a shot above the 18 yard box she had scored giving Glen Shields their first goal of the game.

The Glen Shields girls were not done yet, with hard work and determination they were able to get back into the game. From above the box once again Chantel Azevedo was able to put the ball into the back of the net. This gave the girls a chance to re-group and settle back into the game. At the end of the first half the game was tied 2-2.

During the second half of the game the girls were once again dominating the possession of the game. Shots were firing from every angle of the Glen Shields offence. Chantel once again had the ball on the outside wing and was able to slide the ball in with a low shot towards the net. The girls now had a lead of 3-2. The game was not over yet and the girls from Glen Shields had kept pressuring the Barrie defence. In the last 10 minutes of play Esme Levi was able to riffle a shot and had put the game to rest. The end score was 4-2 for Glen Shields. Fighting back to win the game after a two goal deficit, it was a solid performance from all the girls. (Luciana Di Paolo)

In front of a large crowd of home supporters the U18 Boys defeated the NY Hearrts Azzurri SC even though they did not perform as well as in past games. The boys were able to show their finishing abilities and with this win put the pressure on Richmond Hill, Darlington and Woodbridge our next three opponents to keep up in the league. Wins over these teams will win the league for us.
