The U9 Girls Sun Devils played their hearts out this weekend, August 9-10, at the North Toronto Tournament.  They endured horrible weather conditions, physical and mental challenges.

The Sun Devils went to the finals against Etobicoke and went to full and extra time at 0-0.  It went to penalty kicks and this is where the Sun Devils fell to Etobicoke.

This team of U9 Girls was never outplayed and was always in every game and even dominated.  The only thing missing (and it will come to them) was luck.  Defensively, they were amazing with only 3 goals allowed in 6 games.

The team has grown since last season where the girls never won a Cup game or even did well in a tournament.

This season, a Cup victory, semi-finalist at the COVI and Finalist at this Tournament.  The Coaches and parents are very proud of them!  They were true warriors out there this weekend and we are all proud of them.

U16 Girls Win the
Disney Cup July, 2008

Disney Cup 2008

The Glen Shields U16 Girls rep team represented both our Club, Ontario and Canada extremely well in the Disney International Cup Tournament in Orlando, Florida on July 15-20th, 2008, when they defeated all four opponent teams - Florida, Chicago, Costa Rica and Brazil - bringing them into the Finals against an all American All-Star team.  The score for the final game was 5-0 for Glen Shields.  This all American All-Star team had never lost a game or tournament until now.

The Championship title at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex was well-earned and deserved as they battled tough competition in over 100 degree hot weather.  Coach Mike was very pleased with their performance and is very proud of each and every one of them. The girls were highly complimented on their playing by coaches, parents and spectators at the complex.  The experience was amazing and very memorable for all.

This is their 2nd U.S. championship.  Last summer they took home the U.S.A. Cup from the Schwan's Tournament in Minnesota.   The girls would like to make it three in a row and are already planning their next U.S. tournament for next year.

The boys played with determination, skill and especially heart! They represented the Club with class and respect and we are all very proud of them.

July 27, 2008

The second Final of the day saw the Oakville Blue Stars face the Glen Shields Sun Devils Red. The first half was evenly played, without many scoring opportunities. The defence was strong on both sides, with players running the full length of the field many times to press and defend. The first goal of the game was scored by Oakville #15 Kwesi Williams in the 20th minute as he deflected a corner-kick with a header, off the goalie’s hands, and into the net. Glen Shields was unable to find the equalizer in the first half.

Physical play picked up in the second half with 3 dismissals, including one altercation involving a player from each team. Glen Shields finally found their equalizer in #9 Mario Orestano on a partial break-away with only 12 minutes left in the game. Oakville keeper #1 Peter Michalski attempted a difficult save but came just short with the ball flying over out-stretched fingertips. Glen Shields then scored the go-ahead goal after a penalty shot stopped with an incredible save by the Oakville keeper rebounded to Glen Shields' #21 Daniel Baxa who placed a hard shot into the top-right corner of the net. Oakville pressed hard in the dying minutes, but were unsuccessful in finding the equalizer. The final score was 2 – 1 for Glen Shields Sun Devils Red.

Congratulations Georgetown
Tournament U8 Finalists

BU8 Geogetown Tournament

On behalf of Coach Bruno, Coach Joe, and Tom, we want to thank everyone for an incredible tournament experience this past weekend (July 12-13).  In reflecting, we had many great comments to share.

Firstly, our boys have come a long way in both team and individual development by defeating many tough teams in the tournament, coming out with a 3-1-1 record, second best in the tournament.

Many coaches approached us with very glowing complements about how well we played, how strong we are as a team, and how well behaved our boys were.  Thank you to Bruno, Joe and Patrick for the hard work in getting our players to this point.

Secondly, thanks go out to our incredible parents.  Your cheering on the sideline was inspiring to the players.  The 'This is Our House', 'You can do it!!' comments are just what the boys need.  They will perform so much more strongly with those words of encouragement from both sides of the field, while accepting feedback from the coaches at opportune times before, throughout and after the game.

We also want to thank the parents for your comradery between games.  The bonding that took place, the security in knowing that we were all looking out for each others kids and the friendships the boys developed by playing together during downtime is what holds a team together.

Finally, we want to thank our amazing sponsors for supporting our team financially.  Special thanks goes out to Tony Capone of Home Organizers, for buying breakfast for team members on Sunday morning.  Your generosity and support for the boys means a lot to this team.

Our team is now clearly on the map with very strong Semi finalist and Finalist placings in the two tournaments we have entered, and a superb regular season standing thus far.  We will now gear up and focus our efforts for our next tournament, the Toronto Mini-Cup in August.

The Sun Devils GU9 team had a great showing in the Ajax Tournament on July 12-13 with two ties against King City (The eventual Winners of the Tournament) and Darlington (2nd overall in the Durham League).

The team only had 10 players and we received accolades from the other teams coaching staff on our players.

A major highlight: Sarit Winstok came 2nd overall in the Skill's Competition for ALL U9 Girls.

Thanks,

Enzo & Angelo
